The research library of the National Museum of Scotland dates back over 230 years, with its roots in the collections of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Over 30,000 of its 300,000 printed titles can be browsed by visitors, the remainder being available on request. The library reflects the Museum’s collections and research interests in themes such as archaeology, Scottish history and culture, museology and the history of science and technology. The library also has an important manuscript collection, which includes the journals of the Dumfriesshire antiquarian, Robert Riddell. Drawings, posters and other illustrative material is also held. Books on Scotland’s military and war-time experiences are held in the library at the National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle.
