In addition to the council museums, there are also a number of independent museums in Dumfries and Galloway. Some, such as the museums of Creetown, Dalbeattie, Moffat and Newton Stewart, illustrate local life over the centuries, while others, such as the Museum of Lead Mining in Wanlockhead and Devil’s Porridge in Eastriggs, focus on particular industries or topics. Information about these and other museums can be found in Researching Local History: A Guide to Sources held by Dumfries and Galloway Council, 2009, 109-18. See also the website of Museums Galleries Scotland: http://www.museumsgalleriesscotland.org.uk/. Local societies in Dumfries and Galloway, such as the Kirkmaiden Information Centre, also hold objects that are useful for local and regional study.
