The Family History Research Centre in Dumfries is run by the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society, which was established in 1987 to promote the study of family history. The Centre’s library contains a range of books on local and family history, as well as a number of old and modern maps of the region. It also holds a wide selection of primary source material, some of it on microfilm or microfiche. These resources include: Census records between 1851 and 1901; Old Parochial Registers for all Dumfries and Galloway parishes; a selection of local newspapers; monumental inscriptions; and parish boxes containing small items concerning that parish. The Society produces a newsletter for members three times a year, copies of which can viewed at the Centre. It has also issued a large number of publications, which can be browsed at http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/publications.asp.
