A direct way in which to find out about a person’s life is to ask them and to record what they say. This activity forms a central element of the Study. Following the Study ethos of close collaboration, those who conduct the interviewing are not academics or members of staff, but are instead people from the region who wish to be involved. Training in the ethics and practicalities of fieldwork recording has been provided enabling those with no prior experience to become involved as fieldworkers. In addition, the Stranraer and District Local History Trust very kindly donated over 30 recordings which they have conducted in and around Stranraer. Samples are given here from this collection as well as from the work undertaken by the Study fieldworkers.
